Partners of the Virginia Safe Wildlife Corridors Collaborative (VSWCC) are committed to protecting people and wildlife by reducing animal-vehicle conflicts and improving safe wildlife passage.

We do this by collaboratively identifying and implementing innovative solutions to address human safety, wildlife conservation, and habitat connectivity concerns. We believe in taking a multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder approach to solving complex transportation and ecological problems along Virginia roads. To support these efforts, we will:

  • Share information and research on habitat connectivity across road corridors
  • Identify research gaps and needs
  • Recognize important areas for habitat connectivity
  • Work towards implementing mitigation to decrease deer- and bear-vehicle collisions and increase driver safety
  • Work towards implementing measures to increase habitat connectivity, particularly for small animals
  • Enhance existing underpasses used by (but not designed for) wildlife
  • Research and apply for funding opportunities to implement mitigation
  • Identify wildlife-vehicle collision hotspots and confirm data in the field
  • Serve as a resource for efforts to create and strengthen wildlife corridor policy and wildlife crossing funding mechanisms
